What is the difference between Covid-19, Sars-CoV-2, and Corona?
Even if we continue to talk mostly about coronavirus – the official name of the SARS-like virus is: “SARS-CoV-2”. The lung disease caused by the virus also has its own name. That is: “Covid-19” consists of “coronavirus disease” and the number of the year in which it first appeared.

Where did the name Covid-19 come from?
Diseases are caused by viruses, among others. For example, the HI virus is responsible for AIDS. SARS-CoV-1 is a trigger for severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The lung disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is called “coronavirus disease 2019” or Covid-19 for short. It received this official name from the World Health Organization on February 11th.
It was important to the World Health Organization when naming it that it not stigmatize. In the past, it was not uncommon for diseases to be named by country or region. Also in relation to Covid-19, there have been suggestions to name the disease “Wuhan respiratory syndrome coronavirus” (WRS-CoV) – similar to Mers-Cov, i.e. “Middle East respiratory coronavirus”.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organization has agreed that naming human diseases should have no undue impact on commerce and tourism, for example, and should not offend racial, social or other groups.
