The Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello S is the brand’s first motorcycle with a water-cooled engine. First driving experience with the new and advanced Sports Tourer. Plus: photos, data and price.
Very comfortable and easy to drive
Several assistance systems in series
Expensive but good value for money
When you visit Guzzi’s old factory building in Mandello del Lario for the umpteenth time, you ask yourself how Carlo Guzzi had the idea in 1921 to set up a motorcycle factory on the narrow strip of beach on the eastern side of Lake Como. But despite limited space, investments many years overdue and a temporary loss of technical competitiveness, the motorcycle brand, now over 100 years old, has a loyal following.
She has every reason to be happy with the beginning of the second century of Moto Guzzi’s existence: it seems that the first model of the new era was successful in all respects and has the potential to take the brand with the eagle to new heights. This was shown by the first ride in the S version of the V100 Mandello.
High-tech: many assistance systems
For the first time, a water-cooled engine has been built on Lake Como. A – for the Guzzi – the revolutionary unit: with cylinder heads twisted at an angle of 90 degrees, four valves and a drive-by-wire system, so that there is a choice of four drive modes. The rest of the car is full of elegance the new: for the first time there are semi-active spring and damping elements, a shift assistant for clutchless six gear changes and a full range of assistance systems, because the six-axis sensor system is also integrated. This makes ABS, Dynamic Traction Control and cornering lights possible. Suddenly, Moto Guzzi finds himself in the circle of the high-tech elite in the field of two-wheeled construction.
Mandello gets straight to the point without seeming flippant. It converts gas commands into automatic thrust at almost any speed, and is easy to use, harmonious, and fun. Even pressing the start button signals presence: Exhaust gases flow from the well-formed rear muffler with a roar and signal V100 power without offending the ears of those around you.
In the test: 115-horsepower engine
The 1042 cc engine’s gold-plated cylinder covers dominate in the wind, at an angle of 90 degrees to each other more than ever. But the engine works in new territory: maximum output of 85 kW / 115 hp is provided at 8,700 rpm, and the speed limit is only reached at 9,500 rounds. However, this engine is also in the “basement” Muscular man: willingly accelerates to 2000 rpm, pulls easily and accelerates the 233-kilogram motorcycle effortlessly.
No wonder: 82 percent of the maximum torque of 105 Nm is already available at 3,500 rpm. affiliate Standard consumption is 4.7 liters 100 km seems cheap and achievable; At the first exit, the on-board computer indicated values from 4.8 to 5.2 liters.

Gentle and comfortable handling
The V100 shouldn’t be a compromise between a sportbike and a touring bike, but it should cover both areas perfectly. Say the marketing experts of the Piaggio Group, to which the Moto Guzzi brand has belonged since 2004. We mean: it is Great sports tour It turned out to be useful, stable and confidence-inspiring on the curves, as well as very comfortable and convenient. Aerodynamically, it is modern. exist Two reflectors on the side of the tankthat redirects airflow. Depending on the driving mode, these mini-wings are automatically activated, the speed at which they unfold can be predetermined via the on-board computer. The seating position is comfortable, and the driving experience is excellent, whether on straights or serpentines and wide curves.
Motorcycles and scooters: updates, tests and driving reports
In general, the new TFT screen can be called successful. Provides a lot of information Without being brooding or comically Italian to be. Operation of the all-in-one on-board computer is relatively simple and logical, and the setup options for the assistance systems are compelling. If you want to change the four basic modes, you can do so, but sometimes you have to press the buttons repeatedly. But we’ve already seen much worse solutions.
Not all is well
Like the entire braking system, the ABS works perfectly. Guzzi uses the finest Brembo merchandise for this. Even if it seems so far: the V100 Mandello isn’t perfect. The auto-reset indicator does just that after what seems like an eternity, a USB socket in the cockpit costs extra, and a standard power connection can only be found under the back seat. Also, the quick transmission doesn’t consistently do its job at the highest level; Sometimes it “sticks” noticeably. But these are little things. They do not obscure the generally very positive picture.

Conclusion: a successful sports tour
At €18,000, the S version of the V100 Mandello isn’t cheap, but it does offer a lot for the money. If you want to save 2,500 euros, you can do that too: in the standard version you have to do without the semi-active chassis, the standard Quickshifter and heated clutch plus the tire pressure monitor. It’s still a bike with a contemporary flair. Especially in red, Guzzi’s original colour.
The new engine, but also the general concept of the V100, seem to be a great basis for more variants: we can imagine a naked bike in the future just like the V100 TT, i.e. enduro for travel. It will be interesting to see what height the Mandelo eagle will reach in Jose’s second century.
