One minute on Facebook or Instagram and Meta earn two cents back. seems a little? On average, the group earns 200 euros per year from each user’s data. So the data we generate on social networks is very valuable.
In fact, it is not a new discovery that social media generates billions of dollars in revenue from the sale of targeted ad placements and the commercial exploitation of the personal information of its users. Data analysis by HeyData provides information about the monetary value of personal data for the largest social media platforms. Using revenue per user and average screen time information, it was possible to determine how much Meta, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat platforms earn from a user per minute, hour, day, week, month, and year.
Data about a service generates sales in the billions
Based on average daily screen time and revenue per user data from quarterly reports and annual balance sheets, a rough estimate by data experts in Berlin shows how important the tracked data users share on social networks every minute matters.
For the value of the data, it is necessary to select the platform that tracks the data. In particular, social media leader Meta has mastered personal data marketing. After a year of tracking and average screen time, Meta can market the data tracked across the Facebook and Instagram platforms for around €200. The average user spends 33 minutes on Facebook and 29 minutes on Instagram every day. Meta earns about 2 cents for every minute you spend on the platforms.
The more the better
The value of data tracked in a year is about 66 euros for TikTok. The average user spends about 32 minutes per day on the Chinese company ByteDance’s social video platform. TikTok makes about 34 cents in sales if users stay on the platform for an hour. Therefore, social network operators are doing everything they can to keep their users on the platform as long as possible.
For a dime a dozen, Twitter, TikTok, and Snapchat need to keep their users on the platform for at least two minutes. YouTube takes up to five minutes of screen time to convert a dime. Although YouTube keeps the average user on its platform for 44 minutes a day, the video portal from The Google who market the data obtained in this way only for 29 euros per user per year. In the same period, Twitter generated about 54 euros in sales per user. On average, a megaphone spends 31 minutes a day on SMS and shares 15 cents worth of data.
