China discovers a new mineral on the moon

Chinese scientists They discovered a new lunar mineral by investigating Samples returned from the moon for the Chang’e-5 mission.

This is the first new mineral discovered by China on the moon and the sixth by mankind. After the United States and Russia, Dong Baotong, deputy director of CAEA, said the new discovery makes China the third country in the world to discover a new mineral on the moon’s surface.

The new mineral, dubbed Changesite- (Y), is a type of transparent and colorless columnar crystal. It was discovered by analyzing particles of lunar basalt by a research team from Beijing Uranium Geology Research Institute, It is a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation.

Changesite-(Y) has already been officially approved as a new mineral by the International Minerals Association’s New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification Committee, according to Xinhua News Agency.
