(CNN Spanish) – The first La Paz court that handed down the 10-year prison sentence sentenced former interim President of Bolivia Jeanine Anez in the trial in the so-called “coup 2” case that was carried out by ordinary means against her.
Jeanine Anez and her lawyer can appeal this ruling.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office accused Nez of infrequently taking over the presidency of Bolivia in 2019, in the midst of the country’s social and political crisis.
Anez’s defense asserted that the trial was illegal and violated the constitutional rights of the former interim president. According to her lawyer, she would have assumed the presidency according to the rules of constitutional succession after the resignation and subsequent departure of former President Evo Morales, as well as the resignation of the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate. The Legislative Council that left a power vacuum in the country.
