Americas Summit, live: news and breaking news

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido thanked the “support and recognition” Joe Biden gave him during Wednesday’s call, he said.

“Today #8junio spoke with President Joe Biden POTUS, who affirmed his support for the Venezuelan struggle to restore democracy and achieve free and fair elections. I appreciate your recognition and support for the interim government, and the cause of Venezuela,” Guaido wrote on his Twitter account.

“We thank President Biden POTUS for his support of the people fighting for democracy by not calling on tyrants to summit. He added that the region’s governments should stand by the people and exercise all democratic tools to fight tyranny,” referring to the US veto against Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, which were not invited to the summit.

Guaido has not been invited to the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles, but National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the United States still recognizes him as Venezuela’s interim president.
