Submitting the first patent for the Chinese-Cuban Pan-Corona vaccine “Cuba” Granma

As a result of cooperation in the biotechnology sector between China and Cuba, the first patent for the Pan-Corona vaccine was recently filed at the National Intellectual Property Office of that Asian country, Eduardo Martinez Diaz, president of the BioCubaFarma business group, said via his Twitter account.

The director noted that these joint investigations “aimed at achieving effective vaccines against coronaviruses, and they will not only have value in the current epidemic, but can also be effective against the emergence of new pathogens belonging to this family of viruses.”

Dr. Gerardo Gillen Nieto, Director of Biomedical Research at the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, explained that the Pan-Corona visualization project originated at the request of the Chinese side, and received the approval of the Cuban Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment. . (CIGB), cited by Cubadebate.

He explained that it relies on combining parts of the virus that are conserved and unvulnerable (to generate antibodies), with those geared toward cellular responses.

He commented, in turn, that it is a strategy that can protect against epidemiological emergencies of new strains of coronavirus with the possibility of their existence in the future.

The Pan-Corona project is located in a joint biotechnology research and development center that has been operating since 2019 in Yongzhou (Hunan Province, center), and is managed by experts from CIGB in Cuba.

The initiative focuses on coronaviruses, not only because of the global crisis caused by SARS-COV-2, but also considering that this family of viruses is one of the most likely to be transmitted from animals to humans (a phenomenon called zoonoses), with Antecedents such as mers in the Middle East or SARS-COV-1.

Pan-Corona is a recombinant type antigen, the vaccine development platform on which the CIGB has the most experience, with successful precedents such as hepatitis B, as well as two Cuban vaccines against COVID-19, one of which is Abdallah.
